Week 13 NFL: Late Afternoon Games!
We have some crucial matchups in the late afternoon games on Sunday. Future playoff spots are on the line, so let's breakdown these games and see if we can make some cash doing so..
Late Afternoon Games
Seattle Seahawks (-620) vs. New York Giants (+410)... Spread: Seahawks (-10.5)
In typical Giants fashion, as soon as they start playing well and are contenders in the NFC East, they are dealt with an injury to their starting QB. QB Daniel Jones was injured in week 12 against the Cincinnati Bengals in a game where they won 19-17. Now, the Giants are led by QB Colt McCoy and they will need extra help to match the Seahawks and their high-powered offense on Sunday. The Giants offense has been much more productive with the return of WR Sterling Shepard. This has allowed TE Evan Engram to flourish as he put up 129 receiving yards in week 12. Also, the emergence of RB Wayne Gallman with the injury to Devonta Freeman has been a surprise for the Giants as Gallman had 94 rushing yards and 1 TD in week 12. The Giants will need all these offensive players to over-perform this week to win.
After a hot start to the season, QB Russell Wilson and the Seahawks have slowed down a bit, but are still finding ways to win. In week 12, the Seahawks defeated the Philadelphia Eagles fairly easily 23-17. Wilson only threw for 230 passing yards and 1 TD against the Eagles, but he managed to keep the connection with WR DK Metcalf hot as he had 10 receptions and 177 receiving yards. Also, the return of RB Chris Carson bolstered the run game with 41 rushing yards and 1 TD on only 8 carries. Look for him to be more involved in the offense this week. The Seahawks are heavily favoured in this game and it's for good reason with Daniel Jones out for the Giants. The Seahawks defense is getting healthier and their offense is still potent despite their recent hiccups. Let's take the Seahawks to win at home, but look for the feisty Giants that are fighting for their playoff lives to cover the +10.5 spread.
Prediction: Giants +10.5 (-110)
Arizona Cardinals (+120) vs. Los Angeles Rams (-140)... Spread: Rams (-2.5)
We have an important NFC West matchup in this game as these 2 teams are battling to stay in a playoff spot. The Cardinals are 1-3 in their last 4 games and are in desperate need of a win here to avoid going to 6-6 on the season. In week 12, the Cardinals lost to the New England Patriots 20-17 behind a surprising bad performance from QB Kyler Murray where he threw for 170 yards and 1 INT. Murray's shoulder has been bugging him the past few games and we will see if it continues to bother him because he's the engine behind the success of this team. If Murray isn't at 100% for the rest of the year, the Cardinals will likely not make the playoffs. The anticipated matchup in this game will be between WR Deandre Hopkins and CB Jalen Ramsey, and it will be up to all the weapons on the Cardinals offense to outplay this rugged Rams defense.
The Rams are coming off of an embarrassing 23-20 loss in week 12 to the injury riddled San Fransisco 49ers. Goff went back to his old ways and was a turnover machine with 2 INT's and he only managed to throw for 198 yards. One bright spot for the Rams offense was rookie RB Cam Akers who ran for 84 yards and 1 TD on just 9 carries. Akers was a highly touted rookie coming out of the draft and his playmaking ability down the stretch could boost this offense to new levels if Goff can turn his game around as well. The Rams defense was stellar as always and if the offense can find consistency in their game, this team is a tough out on any given night. With that being said, this could turn out to be a low scoring game and I think it will be close throughout. Let's take the Rams to cover at -2.5 led by their defense and a mediocre day from Goff.
Prediction: Rams -2.5 (-115)
Los Angeles Chargers (-135) vs. New England Patriots (+115)... Spread: Chargers (-1.5)
The Chargers are only 3-8 on the season, but they have been competitive in every game and have had some breakdowns which resulted in losses. They have a chance here to end the season on a high note and carry momentum into next year. In week 12, the Chargers lost to the Buffalo Bills 27-17. Despite the loss, the return of RB Austin Ekeler from injured reserve provided a spark to this offense as he posted 129 yards from scrimmage. When healthy, this offense has no short of talent with rookie QB Justin Herbert running the offense, and with 2 dynamic WR's, Keenan Allen and Mike Williams. The Patriots have an outstanding pass defense, so Ekeler and the rest of the RB's will need another big performance to open up the passing game for Herbert.
The Patriots are 3-1 in their last 4 games and are looking to make a late season push for a wildcard spot. It may be a longshot at this point, but if the Patriots can muster up a win streak, they might claim that last playoff spot in the AFC. In week 12, they pulled off an upset against the Arizona Cardinals 20-17 in a game where their defense was lights out. But, QB Cam Newton had another stinker as he threw 2 INT's and only threw for 84 passing yards. It's no secret that the Patriots like to implement a run heavy offense, so they will continue to rely on the legs of Newton and their RB's to carry them. This game is basically a 'pick-em' and I'm feeling like we should fade the Patriots here fresh off an upset over the Cardinals. Let's smash the Chargers -1.5 in this spot.
Prediction: Chargers -1.5 (-115)
Green Bay Packers (-400) vs. Philadelphia Eagles (+300)... Spread: Packers (-8)
Simply put, the Eagles have been a hot mess this season and they are now sitting 3rd place in the dreadful NFC East division. Despite having an 3-7-1 record, they are still in the hunt for a playoff spot because anyone has a shot to win their division. The play of QB Carson Wentz has been a major storyline for the Eagles this year, but it's not fair to him considering that their offensive line is terrible and doesn't give him time to operate in the pocket. In week 12, the Eagles suffered a 23-17 defeat to the Seattle Seahawks in a game where they came out extremely flat with no one on their offense stepping up. The Eagles defense had been the x-factor for them this year, and they will need to come up big in this game and force Rodgers out of the pocket to make his life miserable. If they give Rodgers time all game, he will pick them apart.
The Packers are sitting comfortably in 1st place in the NFC North, but they need to continue their strong play to finish as high as possible and get home field advantage throughout the playoffs. They are coming off a huge divisional game against the Chicago Bears where they won convincingly 41-25. QB Aaron Rodgers had an easy day at the office as he threw for 4 TD's with just 218 passing yards on 21 completions. Putting up 41 points on a stout defense like the Bears is impressive and they will face another tough task this week against a hungry Eagles team desperate for a win. With that being said, the Eagles offense is terrible, but their defense gives them a chance to be competitive in every game. The Packers should have no issues winning at home, but the -8 spread is a little too high for my liking. Let's take the Eagles at +8 in what could be a sloppy game.
Prediction: Eagles +8 (-110)
