NFL Sunday Night Football: San Fransisco 49ers vs. Los Angeles Rams Preview, Odds, and Prediction

This Sunday night showdown features a matchup between the struggling San Fransisco 49ers and the surging Los Angeles Rams. Who is going to win you may ask? Let's take a look at my preview before kickoff.

Sunday Night Football

San Fransisco 49ers (+120) vs. Los Angeles Rams (-140)... Spread: Rams (-3)

This is almost a do-or-die game for the defending NFC champions. They are 2-3 in 2020 and are really struggling on the offensive side of the ball, while also dealing with a lot of injuries on the defensive side. They will be without DL Nick Bosa, DL Solomon Thomas, DE Ziggy Ansah, DE Dee Ford, CB Richard Sherman, and more... All of these players can be playmakers in any given game, and their absence from the starting lineup was evident in week 5. In week 5, the 49ers got smoked by the Miami Dolphins 43-17 in what was an unacceptable performance by both the defense and offense. Also, the return of QB Jimmy Garoppolo was simply a horror show. In week 5, he only racked up 77 passing yards with 2 Int's before getting pulled. But, he will also need help on the ground to set up the passing game with RB's Raheem Mostart and Jerick McKinnon leading the backfield this week. Both of these RB's can do damage in the passing game as well and they will be important in this game and relied on to create big plays. If the 49ers have any chance of winning in week 6, it starts with their QB because their defense isn't what it was last year with all the injuries. If Garoppolo has another stinker, it could be light out early for the 49ers.

The Rams are once again looking like the Super Bowl contenders from a few years ago. The offense and the defense are firing on all cylinders at the moment. Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey have been dominant this year as the Rams defense is shutting down opposing offenses with relative ease. They have only allowed on average 18.6 points per game in 2020 and are managing to keep opposing offenses off the scoresheet regularly. Aaron Donald is on a mission this year and already has 7.5 sacks through 5 weeks, which leads the league. If he can get to Garoppolo quick and early in this game, they should be able to get some turnovers as Garoppolo has been questionable with his decision making so far this year. On offense, the Rams are led by QB Jared Goff who is playing solid and coming off a 309 passing yard and 2 TD performance in week 5. He has a lot of weapons on the outside with WR's Robert Woods, Cooper Kupp, and Josh Reynolds. Also, he has 2 solid weapons at TE as well Gerald Everett and Tyler Higbee both having pass-catching ability. So, look for Goff and the offense to spread the ball around on this depleted 49ers defense and take advantage of mismatches all night.

As for my betting pick in this game, let's take the Rams spread at -3 for the plus money and a great value pick in this Sunday night game. For all we know, the 49ers might bounce back, but the injures are catching up to them on defense and the Rams are the much more trustworthy team to take in this spot. Let's take the 4-1 Rams to roll into San Fran and escape with a victory on Sunday night.

Prediction: Rams -3 (+105)
