NFL Monday Night Football: New York Jets vs. New England Patriots Preview, Odds, and Prediction

We have a couple of underperforming teams playing on Monday night that are looking to come out of week 9 with a positive result. The New York Jets are set to host the New England Patriots in an AFC East battle.

New York Jets (+325) vs. New England Patriots (-450)... Spread: Patriots (-10)

Will the Jets win a game this year? At this rate, we'd have to say probably not. They are the worst team in the NFL and are having a difficult time clicking on both sides of the ball. And to make matters worse, their starting QB Sam Darnold is listed as doubtful for this game and they will have to rely on QB Joe Flacco to get the job done. Maybe one silver lining for the Jets offense is rookie WR Denzel Mims who is looking like a blue-chip prospect for this Jets organization. He has led the Jets in receiving yards the past 2 games and is looking more and more comfortable in the offense every week. However, the sad part is that he's only been able to put up 42 receiving yards in each of those games, which shows us that the offense is a mess at the moment. Also, the Jets will be happy to get WR Jamison Crowder back in the lineup in this game as he's been their most consistent weapon on offense this year when he's healthy. Beating the Patriots, a team that has haunted them in the AFC East, would make Jets fans very happy despite only moving to 1-8 if that happens.

The Patriots have been equally as disappointing this year with a 2-5 record on the season. QB Cam Newton's costly mistakes have hurt them this year on offense as the Patriots dynasty is over after seeing them perform in the post-Brady era. In week 8, the Patriots lost to the Buffalo Bills 24-21 after Newton fumbled the ball on the last drive in Bills territory, which ultimately led to the loss. The Patriots also have a 'silver lining' this year with RB Damien Harris who is looking solid after beginning the year on the IR. The Patriots have a crowded backfield, but Harris seems to be separating himself from the pack at the moment in the rushing department. In week 8, Harris managed to rush for 102 yards on 16 carries and 1 TD. The Patriots have become a run first team under Newton, so his play, along with the other RB's will be crucial to their success against the Jets.

Turnovers will once again be a question mark in this game for the Patriots, and if they can limit them, they should be able to cruise to victory in this game. Even though Newton has had his struggles in 2020, he has shown flashes of brilliance and is still a gamer, so I think he can bounce back against the Jets' terrible defense. Also, I don't have any confidence in the Jets offense at the moment, so I think Belichick can rally the Patriots defense to contain Flacco and the Jets stagnant offense. The -10 spread is quite hefty in this Monday nighter, but I have a feeling the Patriots luck will change this week and we'll see a huge win. Hammer the Patriots -10 at a good price.

Prediction: Patriots -10 (-105)
