New Orleans Saints (-340) vs. Los Angelas Chargers (+270)... Spread: Saints (-7)
Is Justin Herbert ready to handle a prime time game? Herbert wasn't even slated to be the #1 QB for the Chargers this season, but thanks to the team doctor puncturing Tyrod Taylor's lung, Herbert has taken over the starting role and has looked pretty good. He was drafted 6th overall in the 2020 NFL draft and it was a matter of time before he took over as the starting QB. In week 4, the Chargers lost 38-31 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but Herbert played very well and had little support in the running game. Herbert thew for 290 yards with 3 TD's and 14 rushing yards (led his team). The Chargers running game needs to be much better this week if they want to win, and that will be up to RB Joshua Kelly. RB Austin Ekeler was placed on IR with an injury, so now the rookie RB will need to takeover as the workhorse back. In week 4, Kelley only managed to get 9 yards on 7 carries in a game that was high scoring. He will need to bounce back this week because the Charges will have to rely on the 2 rookies, Justin Herbert and Joshua Kelly, to come up big on Monday night against a stingy Saints defense.
On the other side of the field, this Saints team has had a very up and down season so far. QB Drew Brees has been very average and father time may be catching up to him a tad. He's coming off a modest week 4 performance where he put up 246 passing yards with 2 TD's and 1 INT. Luckily for Brees, it's been the Alvin Kamara show on offense in 2020 thus far and he is arguably the main reason they are 2-2 and don't have a losing record. Also, WR Micheal Thomas has become a storyline for the Saints, but for all the wrong reasons. He will not suit up this week, but it's not due to injuries. Thomas had an altercation at Saints practice where he punched a teammate and the team decided to bench him this week. With Thomas not suiting up for the Saints on Monday night, the WR's on the Saints will need to step up if they have any chance of winning. So, WR's Emmanuel Sanders and Tre'Quan Smith with be relied on heavily again to pick up the slack. But, the Saints and Brees are much more efficient in their home stadium (the dome), so I expect a good performance from their offense.
The Saints are a pretty heavy favourite in this game against the Chargers. This will be a classic 'youth vs. experience' matchup where experience will prevail in this primetime spot. Thomas will be a huge loss for the Saints on offense, but I expect the 2 headed monster of the RB's Alvin Kamara and Latavius Murray to have big games to make up for the loss on the outside. Both of the Saints and Chargers defenses are pretty solid, so it will interesting to see which offense can generate more points. My money is on Brees and the Saints offense on their home field to outplay Herbert and the Chargers offense, so I will take them to cover the 7 point spread Monday night.
Prediction: Saints -7 (-110)
